Chapter One
Born from ashes
The sound of a school bell echoed threw the large 3 story building of my school. It was only the first day of my first year of high school and I had already made friends with most of the kids in my class. Unlike most school’s there weren’t that many bullies and every one seemed to get along which was a good thing, I was tired of being picked on. One of my friends from last year at my middle school was in my last class. She stood and moved to my desk.
“We walking home together like normal?” she asked as she stopped next to me.
“Of course!” I chimed happily and stood with a smile.
This was normal. I would go to school, talk to my friends and take notes of what the teacher said. I was a strait A student, top of my class, and the most popular girl in school. I have one green eye and one blue with black hair and pail skin. My mom was from Germany which is why I was paler than most girls here and my dad was from one of the smaller islands of Japan. We had just reached the locker rooms of the school when I noticed I had forgotten my note book.
“Oh no!” I grumbled before turning to my friend.
“What is it?” she asked as she slipped her shoes on.
“I forgot my note book… and we have a test tomorrow.” I said and turned towards the hall we had just left.
“I’ll be right back. I’m going to go get it. Meet me at the front gate.” I said and took off down the hall.
It wasn’t long before I found my self in the long empty hall ways of the school. I stepped into my class room, the teacher was already gone. Sitting on my desk was my note book… and with it was another note book. I blinked, moving to the two note books and picking them up.
“This one isn’t mine… did some one else forget it here?” I asked looking at the strange black lettering on the front of the bone white book. I couldn’t make out what it said, it looked like it was in Hebrew of some sort of middle eastern lettering. Now don’t get me wrong, normally I wouldn’t open some one else notes, expectably when it had other languages on the front, but curiosity got the best of me and I pulled it open. Inside where white pages with what seemed to be English written inside. My eyes trailed on the first few sentences.
Death Note: How to Use It
1. The human whose name is written in the note shall die.
I stopped right there, it must be a prank after all, what book could kill some one just by writing there name in it. I shrugged. I don’t know why I picked it up and decided to bring it with. I guess I thought it was funny, I mean after all, a book called Death note. I guessed it was some kind of hit list or maybe even a black list of some kind but it was empty. It was left on my desk so I figured some one in class wanted me to have it. I put it inside my note book, not wanting any one to see it. After walking back to the locker room I slipped on my shoes and left my school shoes inside, shutting it and putting my books in my back pack, along with the death note. Stepping out side I noticed my friend was waiting next to the front gate. I smiled and waved running over.
“Sorry about that, I got lost.” I lied smoothly, not wanting her to know about the book.
“It’s ok, I got a chance to talk to Kabashigawa-kun.” She giggled.
“What! And I wasn’t here! Awww, your so lucky Sakura-chan!” I said and pouted as we started to walk. The rest of the way went by uneventfully, Sakura and I lived just down the block from each other so we walked home most of the way.
I got home at half passed 6, I had a few hours to study before I went to my study group at the locale community collage. Of course when I opened the door my father was already home and mom must have been at work still or caught up in traffic. He turned in his seat when I opened the front door.
“Your late.” He said with an annoyed tone.
“I’m sorry I left my books in the class room and got lost in the school.” I said but knew my excuses wouldn’t work.
“No excuses.” He growled and pointed me towards my room.
I was lucky, I had gotten off easy, he must have been in a good mood today. I kicked off my shoes and moved up the stairs to my room before he had a chance to change his mind. Shutting the door I sighed with relief then pulled my bag off dropping it on my bed. The white note book from my bag fell out, the front pocket must have opened while I was walking home. Looking over I blinked and picked it up from the floor. I moved to my computer desk and placed it down, opening it back up to the rules. This time I would read them all, I guess I would play along with this persons little game.
Death Note: How to Use It
1. The human whose name is written in the note shall die.
2. The note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
3. If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen.
4. If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack.
5. After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
6. The note shall become the property of the human world, once it touches the ground of the human world.
7. The owner of the note can recognize the image and voice of its original owner, i.e. a god of death. (… Shinigami? This had to be a joke every one knows those were just stories passed down to scare little kids into following the rules.)
8. The human who uses this note can neither go to Heaven nor Hell.
9. If the time of death is written within 40 seconds after writing the cause of death as a heart attack, the time of death can be manipulated, and the time can go into effect within 40 seconds after writing the name.
10. The human who touches the Death Note can recognize the image and voice of its original owner, a god of death, even if the human is not the owner of the note.
11. The person in possession of the Death Note is possessed by a god of death, its original owner, until they die. ( so if this is true.. then we become there toy?)
12. If a human uses the note, a god of death usually appears in front of him/her within 39 days after he/she uses the note. ( scary…)
13. Gods of death, the original owners of the Death Note, do not do, in principle, anything which will help or prevent the deaths in the note.
14. A god of death has no obligation to completely explain how to use the note or rules which will apply to the human who owns it.
15. A god of death can extend his life by putting human names on the note, but humans cannot.
6. A person can shorten his or her own life by using the note. ( So if you use it.. you’ll die sooner… does some one want me dead?)
17. The human who becomes the owner of the Death Note can, in exchange of half of his/her remaining life, get the eyeballs of the god of death which will enable him/her to see a human's name and remaining lifetime when looking through them.
18. A god of death cannot be killed even if stabbed in his heart with a knife or shot in the head with a gun. However, there are ways to kill a god of death, which are not generally known to the gods of death.
19. The conditions for death will not be realized unless it is physically possible for that human or it is reasonably assumed to be carried out by that human.
20. The specific scope of the condition for death is not known to the gods of death, either. So, you must examine and find out.
21. One page taken from the Death Note, or even a fragment of the page, contains the full effects of the note. (Interesting…)
22. The instrument to write with can be anything, ( e.g. cosmetics, blood, etc.) as long as it can write directly onto the note and remains as legible letters. (So you can’t use invisible ink… that sucks)
23. Even the original owners of the Death Note, gods of death, do not know much about the note.
24. You may also write the cause and/or details of death prior to filling in the name of the individuals. Be sure to insert the name in front of the written cause of death. You have about 19 days (according to the human calender0 in order to fill in a name.
25. Even if you do not actually possess the Death Note, the effect will be the same if you can recognize the person and his/her name to place in the blank.
26. The Death Note will not affect those under 780 days old.
27. The Death Note will be rendered useless if the victim's name is misspelled four times.
28. "Suicide" is a valid cause of death. Basically, all humans are thought to possess the possibility to commit suicide, it is, therefore, not something "unbelievable to think of".
29. Whether the cause of the individual's death is either a suicide or accident, if the death leads to the death of more than the intended, the person will simply die of a heart attack. This is to ensure that other lives are not influenced.
Well, the book was very specific about the rules, so I figured if some one planned it out this well I might as well try it to make sure. I turned on my television and to the news channel, there was always something going on around this time of day. Pulling out one of my pencils I waited for a criminals face and name to pop up. After a few moments some one did. A foreigner from England had tried to rob a bank and was now inside with hostages. I pressed my pencil to the page and started to right. I figured I would go with heart attack because it was a clean way to die, no blood or mess but at the same time was extremely painful, perfect. I finished writing, Jonathan Potts and no cause of death listed. I turned to the screen and closed the book, waiting. This had to have been the longest 40 seconds I had ever sat threw. The sound of my alarm clock clicking in the back ground seemed to slow before low and behold, almost 45 seconds had gone by and nothing. I sighed and looked at the note book. I kind of felt disappointed but then I heard something on the TV that caught my attention.
“Breaking news, it seems the foreigner has collapsed and the hostages have escaped…“The news women said.
I blinked, was it me, did I do it, was the note book real!
“It’s been confirmed that the man collapsed and is now dead from a heart attack.” I felt my heart skip a beat.
Turning to the book I looked at in disbelief before there was a knock on my door. I stumbled around the room before slipping the note book in one of my dresser doors and placing my school books on the desk with a few of them open and a few pages I had been working on it school on the desk. I had just made it when the door opened. It was father again. His face was red and he looked distressed.
“Sit down.” He demanded and I did as he moved to my bed to sit.
The room stayed quite as I waited for him to speak It seemed to be hours that we sat there, I waited as he just sat there looking at the floor. It wasn’t long before he placed his hands over his face and began to cry… Ok now I know something is wrong, something bad, my dad never cried, especially not in front of me.
“Dad?” I asked but didn’t get a response.
I waited for what seemed to be another hour before he finally regained him self and spoke.
“It’s your mother…. She died.” I froze.
My heart skipped a few beats as tears formed in my eyes.
Father left the room, leaving me to my tears. I didn’t go to study group that night and cried my self to sleep.
I awoke to my alarm going off, my friend was already down stairs, I must have hit the snooze button. I got dressed quickly and pulled the Death note out of my dresser and placed it once more into my back pack before heading down stairs.
“Hey.” I said in a grim tone.
“What’s wrong?” Sakura responded with concern.
“My mom died yesterday.” I mumbled as I headed out the door.
“Oh my god! Are you sure you shouldn’t stay home.” Sakura said with a concerned look.
“No I need to keep my grades up.” I said calmly as she followed me.
The rest of the walk to school was quite, Sakura just watched me with concern waiting for me to talk, but I never did. Before I knew it we were at school. I put my shoes in my locker before heading to the top floor and then to my first class. Sitting down I didn’t speak to any one just pulled out my text book and notes. The day went by like this until school was out. Of course I hadn’t realized the bell had rung and had been sitting there for a long time now. My eyes were on my cell phone, watching the news and listening threw my ear piece which was hidden in my hooded jacket and hair. I had pulled out one of the pages of the death note and had been writing down name after name for the past hour or so making it look like the page what just a part of my school note book. To any normal person this would look like I was just writing down names for something, plus no one would bother to remember them so if they saw the names it would be fine. After a second I looked up, standing I put my stuff in my bag and stood. I started to walk down the hall way, watching the floor silently. I turned a corner and... WAM!
“Watch where you’re going.” I heard a girl growl before I looked up.
“Sorry.” I mumbled only to notice the shocked look on her face.
I turned, oh dear; the death note had fallen onto the floor out of my bag. I snatched it up quickly and put it in my bag zipping it close and standing. I tried to leave but she grabbed my arm and pulled me into one of the class rooms.
“You have a death note!” she demanded pushing me into the class room and blocking the door.
“So you know what it is then…” I mumbled getting a bit defensive.
“Of course I do, any one who knew the truth about Kira and how he killed would know what it is!” she scoffed.
“I figured that’s how he did it after I read the rules.” I mumbled mostly to my self as my suspicions were confirmed.
“Where did you get it.” She growled closing in on me.
“It was on my desk when I came back to class to get my note book.” I said taking a step back and putting a hand on the pocket knife in my jacket.
“Did you see any one come out of the class room before you got there?” She said and stopped progressing towards noticing my defensive stance.
“No I didn’t, it was just there on my desk under my note book.” I responded relaxing slightly but keeping my hand on the knife.
She stopped asking questions for now, placing a hand on her chin in thought with a deep thinking look across her face. She then looked at me once more after a moment of acquired silence.
“Have you used it?” she asked now seeming to calm a bit more, almost seeming to whisper.
“Yeah…” I mumbled.
“So you’re the reason the guy in the bank died.” She said piecing two and two together.
“And if I am…” I said with a dark tone.
“Why did you do it?” she asked crossing her arms seeming to test me.
“Justice.” I said, this was the only word needed to express my reasons.
Instantly I saw a small glint in her eyes before she pushed it away to keep her self from being found out but I could already tell. She was just like me.
“You’re coming over to my house.” She demanded and walked out the class room.
Of course I didn’t want to go but it seemed she gave me no choice, so I followed. It wasn’t long before we arrived at her house. It was a run down old style Japanese house, much like those you would see in anime horror. She stepped inside, not announcing her presence to any one and kicking off her shoes before heading strait upstairs. I just did the same and followed, ser ether lived alone or her family wasn’t there.
The floor creaked as we walked up and she pushed her door open. Her bed room was covered in news papers and other things, four monitors were connected to a large computer with internal cooling system. The room glowed green from the coolant that was light by neon green lighting that were placed around the clear casing. She pulled up a chair and said down before pointing at another chair next to her. I sat and she turned to the computer. Before long she had pulled up over 5 large documents listed about the Kira case, excluded information.
“Where did you get this?” I asked looking at her.
“I hacked into the police servers from a library half way across Japan using USB card to copy the information onto my computer.” She responded.
I blinked.
“Well that’s a very round about way of doing things…” I muttered.
“Yeah but now they can’t track me.” She responded.
“Not true, it would have been best to go to a library down the street for a month or so before hacking into the servers so that way if they tracked who was on the computer that day, you would seem like a normal user…” I said calmly.
“Who’s the one with the high tech gear and advanced hacking skills?” she scoffed.
“Who’s the one who thought of this in two seconds?” I retorted.
She blank faced.
“Do you want the information or not?” she finally spoke after a moment of silence.
“Do you still have the USB?” I asked.
“Yeah.” She pulled a black USB out from a computer door.
“Can you come to my place?” I stood taking the USB.
“Sure.”
Shutting down the computer we stood and left the old house. It wasn’t long before we made it to my house. I opened the front door, lucky me, dad wasn’t home. We kicked off our shoes. It wasn’t long before we where sitting comfortable in my room.
“It’s clean…” she glanced around the room.
“And…” I turned to her as my computer downloaded the information.
“It’s…. to clean.” She said examining my A-Z 1-3 organized bookshelves of collage study books and dictionaries of multiple different languages.
I blank faced her.
“It makes it easier to find things.” I noted.
“It makes it to easy to find things.” She said as her eyes shot towards me like bullets.
“Right.” I mumbled.
My computer binged.
“It’s done.” I said and turned to it.
What seemed like the next hour was spent reading.
“Hm…to bad.” I said noticing she had gotten the name of the detective who had solved Kira’s case but not a picture.
“What?”
“No picture of Near.”
“Oh… yeah.” She seemed disappointed.
“Let me see the death note” she said suddenly.
“What?! No!” I went for my bag but she stopped me with her foot, boot to the head.
She pulled out the Death note, looking at the rules as I struggled to get it back.
A loud crack of thunder caught our attention as a gust of wind blew opened my window with a crash. A shadow loomed over as we both froze, looking to the window.
